You can attempt an assignment in which 'make a copy' is enabled for some Google document while some other documents (Google docs or file attachments) are simply attached to the assignment for reference. Just the difference being that the copies of only the Google documents with 'make a copy' enabled will be created.
For example, in the following assignment, two Google docs have 'make a copy' enabled which means their copies will be made for you in your Google Drive to make a submission (annotated with number "1"). Whereas, one Google doc and a PDF file attachment are attached to the assignment for your reference and whose copies will not be made for your submissions (annotated with number "2").
