Aligning standards to an assignment (SBGR)

SBGR stands for Standards Based Grading and Reporting. It involves measuring learners understanding of a concept on pre-defined standards/objectives. The reporting is done based on these standards/objectives rather than the letter grades as done in the assessment grading method. These are called learning standards/objectives, which provide a baseline that is consistent across all learners at the classroom level. Currently, the SBGR is an instructor driven process and they work with learners to make sure that they learn all of the expected standards they need to and hence improve their mastery level.

Aligning standards to an assignment

1. Add an assignment or edit an existing assignment.

If you are editing an existing assignment, do check if learners have started with an attempt. If some learners have started with an attempt or made a submission, then changes made to the assignment may not update these attempts.

2. In the expanded view, click the Grading block to expand and then click Rubric to open the rubric picker.

3. The rubric picker popup opens. You can pick an existing rubric that you have created earlier from My Rubrics or pick a rubric from the Rubric Bank if it is already shared with the Rubric Bank.

4. You can also create a new rubric, which we will be doing for the purpose of this article. Click + Create new rubric button.

5. Rename the rubric as per your requirement. You can also enter a description (optional).

6. To pick objectives, click the Pick an objective button.

7. You will be shown all the objectives that have been mapped for that classroom as per the curriculum. Pick the objectives based on the curriculum and standards. In this case, the learning objectives of Grade 9/10 in subject English (G9-G12) is mapped to the classroom.

You may pick the objectives from other Grade/Subject as per the availability.

8. You can pick multiple objectives from multiple levels based on what curriculum and standards are set for the classroom .

9. The count for the total number of objectives selected for all the standards will be shown at the top right corner of the objective picker.

10. Once you are done picking the objectives, click Done.

11. All the objectives picked will be added to the rubric.

12. By default a newly created rubric is a 'scoring' rubric and therefore scores will be associated with each picked objectives.

If required, the default setting for a rubric can be configured from 'scoring' to 'non-scoring' at the site-level. You can contact your admin or write to us for this change.

13. If you don't want a scoring rubric, click the Non-Scoring radio button. The rubric will become a non-scoring rubric and the numbers will stop showing up along with the total score of the rubric.

14. If you don't want to use your self-created criteria or the sample criteria, then you can hover over the criteria and click the trash icon to delete it.

You cannot delete a sample criteria initially when no objectives are picked for that rubric. Once you add an objective, the trash icon will appear for the criteria for deletion. Although, the text - "Sample Criteria" is configurable at site-level and can be changed on request.

15. If you think your rubric is a standard rubric which others can also use, then you can choose to share it with the rubric bank by clicking the Share with rubric bank radio button. Once a rubric is shared with the rubric bank, it will be available for other instructors to add in their assignments.

The descriptor for the rubric criterion is non-editable by default, but can be configured as editable from Teamie's end on request.

16. Click Attach to assign the rubric to the assignment.

17. The rubric will get attached to your assignment and the score will change automatically in case the rubric is a scoring rubric. You can assign the maximum score manually in case the rubric is non-scoring (the default maximum score is 1).

18. Click Publish to make your assignment visible to the learners.

Learners will also be able to view the rubric objectives that are aligned to the assignment on the assignment expanded view and assignment taking page.
